Painting Progression: Cateye Sunflower

I started my cateye sunflower painting on July 27th, 2019. Sunflowers have always been a favorite flower of mine from when I used to grow them in my grandmother's backyard. The first drawing below was one I made in middle school after being astonished to find a large praying mantis sitting atop one of the flowers one late summer afternoon eating ants.

I had the idea for a cateye sunflower painting and decided to sit down and put my idea on paper. I was really happy with the results of the main sunflower and the detail in the cat eye. I was so happy with how the eye turned out that I let this sit for almost an entire year, worried I would mess the rest of the painting up. I let this sit in my unfinished paintings on top of my art cabinet so long that the masking fluid around the flower didn't want to peel off of the watercolor paper.

Once I finally decided that this couldn't sit any longer, I felt super rusty painting and drawing. Overall, I'm really happy how this painting turned out. This really started the momentum for me to get back to painting again. This taught me that the only thing worse than "messing up" a piece of art is never finishing it and just letting something I love to do go by the wayside out of fear or anxiety. My art is about exploration and expression and there just isn't any room for doubting myself. Creating takes confidence.
